This specialized Nanny and Sitter training program is 100% online with on-demand faculty-taught classes. Focused on safety and childcare skills, the Basic Childcare program requires:
- High school diploma or GED
- CPR and First Aid certification
This program includes 10 hours of Basic classes.
CC 101: Understanding Children
Children are complex and change as they advance in development. This course is an introduction to childhood stages including newborn, toddler, preschool, and primary years with physical, social, and emotional developmental milestones.
CC 102: Children and the Law
Laws differ in each state, but compliance with local child safety provisions is always mandatory. This course will review relevant laws on proper transportation, child abuse, emergency childcare, and more. Protections and liabilities for childcare workers are also discussed.
CC 103: Positive Discipline
Positive discipline is based on mutual respect using firm and kind direction to help children learn to manage their emotions and behaviors. This course examines different types of discipline and behaviors, providing tools for decision making and setting up an environment that encourages prosocial behaviors.
GE 101: Professionalism
Conducting yourself with high character, integrity, and behaving with moral principles is required to be a positive role model for children. This course discusses how to engage proactively and help make appropriate choices while employed in childcare.
GE 102: Stress Management
Stress during childcare is inevitable as juggling children, parents, play dates, and a personal life is a lot to manage. This course will discuss how to recognize the different components of stress, both physiological and psychological, and will cover behaviors and techniques helpful to reduce and manage stress reactions as a caregiver and to help children manage their stress.
HS 101: Emergency Planning
Being prepared can help identify potential emergencies and possibly save lives. This course teaches specific actions needed for a wide range of emergencies and provide tools to develop and use an emergency plan.
HS 102: Safety in the Home
One of the primary responsibilities of a childcare provider is to supervise and monitor the safety of children in their care. This course will identify many of the physical risks a child might encounter in the home environment and discuss ways to eliminate or minimize the risk of harm.
HS 103: Water Awareness
Swimming, boating, and other water sports are popular activities, especially during the summer. This course will provide water safety guidelines when in, on, or around the water.
HS 104: Food Safety
From processes on the farm to practices in the kitchen, food safety is important to decrease the risk of foodborne illness. This course will provide some basic concepts of food safety practices for preparing, serving, reheating, and managing food.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any discounts to the tuition or fees?
Amslee Institute offers scholarships, when available. Otherwise, there are no discounts available for tuition or fees. Amslee Institute programs are licensed by the Florida Department of Education and as such “Tuition or fee discounts are not permissible; any reductions of tuition or fees must comply with subsection 6E-1.0032(7), F.A.C.”
Do I have to complete CPR and First Aid training before enrolling?
No, CPR and First Aid certification can be completed before or after enrollment. CPR and First Aid certification must be completed with documentation provided within the 12 weeks of enrollment and prior to receiving a diploma or certification. Amslee Institute does not offer CPR or First Aid training and recognizes certification documents from reputable organizations. First Aid and CPR certification is available online for $30.
I am not living in the United States, can I enroll?
Yes, as long as you meet the program requirements, you can enroll online and complete the program from any location in the world. Job placement services; however, are only available to those living in the United States.
I graduated high school in another country, can I enroll?
Yes, if you completed the equivalent of a high school diploma. Documentation of equivalent education from other countries that is officially translated into English is sufficient to meet the high school diploma requirement. If any post-secondary training or classes were taken towards an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, transcripts from a licensed college or university can also be submitted to meet this requirement.
What are the enrollment requirements?
Enrollment requires students to be at least 16 years old, have a government-issued identification (from any country), and be currently enrolled in or have completed high school (or equivalent).
Will I need to buy textbooks?
No, all the course materials are available online and included in the tuition and fees. Every course has a study guide that can be downloaded and used to capture notes from the course. The courses are copyrighted and cannot be saved on a personal computer in any way. The exceptions are reference materials and course study guides, which can be downloaded from the Additional References page in the student portal. Any personal notes taken during the program can be saved as a reference. Amslee Institute grants unlimited access to all the course materials during the 12 weeks of enrollment.
